The highly anticipated three night stand by jazz fusion greats Medeski, Martin & Wood is upon us and it offers adventurous music lovers the chance to experience the magic this band conjures live in the intimate space at Le Poisson Rouge. The trio’s fusion of jazz, funk & “avant-noise” has garnered a reputation for great live shows that celebrate the experimental aspects of the bands compositions. The band is also renowned for their extended musical improvisations and deep playlist making their live appearances unique experiences. Medeski, Martin & Wood have a loyal fanbase that include tradional jazz lovers, the jam band community, progressive rock afficionados, hip-hop & dance music freaks and anyone who loves new jazz music.
Formed in 1991, the band is John Medeski on keyboards, Billy Martin on drums and Chris Wood on bass. Their discography features some amazing work that is worth exploring as well. A good place to start are the excellent compilations which offer new listeners to the group the opportunity to get a real sense of their work. Last Chance To Dance Trance (Perhaps): Best of (1991-1996) is an excellent introduction to their early recordings filled with funky gems. Note Bleu: Best of the Blue Note Years 1998- 2005 is a great compilation of their recordings with the Blue Note label. Medeski, Martin & Wood have also recorded albums with jazz guitarist John Scofield and Medeski has appeared on over a dozen recordings with John Zorn on the Tzadik label.
