I love short dresses. I am singer-songwriter Shije (http://shije.com).

Besides following music, I write about other art forms, like Fashion Week in New York – a special time, twice-yearly, when fashion, art and music collide.
Recently, on my way to Nubia’s knit designs clubwear show, I passed this natural fibers store in SoHo.

Wow!

That’s quite a yarn star!

The real yarn star of the new design world is a model named Nubia. Called “graceful and elegant” in Really Great Magazine, she was chosen to debut her fashion designs at this cozy party.

When I went to the party, I knew this model, my fellow singer friend, Leandra Ramm.
I knew it would be all about cotton & fibers like hemp.

I knew it would be a new, local designer, and that it would be dresses.

And I knew Brooks, publisher of Talent in Motion magazine.

What I did not know was that I would cry upon hearing of Nubia’s rescue from Hurricane Sandy. Nubia lives in one of the hardest hit areas called New Dorp, in Staten Island. I could add photos of Sandy’s destruction there (two story houses lifted off their foundations by sea water), but suffice it to say, it is still Katrina-like conditions, months later. I am sure Nubia was in danger during the storm. While the flood filled her place with water, she survived by escaping through a window.

After the show, Nubia thanked all the models, photographers and writers who helped her modeling career and now her clothing designs. Then what a heartwarming surprise she saved for last!

She introduced the man who pulled her out of her window and gave him an emotional thank-you right there on the catwalk. “He saved me! Out my window! AND MY TURTLE!” Then she burst into tears. They hugged, and she cried more. I could tell he was emotional, too, listening to her re-live her fear.

I love the designs, and love Nubia. I love anyone who cares about animals, even the littlest ones, like a pet turtle. And, I love good neighbors that look in on their neighbors, and I love the first-responders. To get more information about Nubia and her creations (and maybe some news about her turtle!), her website is Nubia007.com. On Facebook, find Nubia Unique Boutique where she has displayed 14 of her designs, starting at only US$60.
